Did You Know? Fun Fact About the Great Pyramid of Cholula
Did you know? 👀 While the world’s tallest pyramid is the Great Pyramid of Giza, the world’s largest pyramid is actually located in Mexico! 🇲🇽
Known as the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the volume of this pyramid is what makes it the largest, with its base measuring 300 by 315 metres. In fact, it is the largest monument ever built in the world. 🏗️ Easily mistaken for a hill, this pyramid is crowned by the Spanish church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, which was built in 1594. ⛪️
Like many sites in Latin America, the sacred past of the pyramid lies beneath a Catholic structure. Due to its historical importance and partial private ownership, the pyramid has never been fully excavated, though archaeologists have discovered over 8 km of tunnels hidden inside. 🧐
